Itinerary

This trip takes on a day tour to one of the must-see cities in Bulgaria – Plovdiv and the nearby Asen’s Fortress.

Plovdiv is a big modern city with an ancient heart. There is evidence of habitation in Plovdiv dating back to the 6th millennium BCE, when the first Neolithic settlements were established. It has been considered one of the oldest cities in the world. Its very central part keeps the treasures of old civilizations. Here you can see Roman ruins, old Bulgarian architecture and learn a lot about Thracians who first settled there. We will enjoy the unique blend of old and new, visiting the Old Town and one of the most popular social and cultural quarters – Kapana.

Asen’s Fortress (Asenova Krepost) is a medieval fortress in the Bulgarian Rhodope Mountains, built on a high rocky ridge on the left bank of the Asenitsa River. The earliest archaeological findings date from the time of the Thracians, the area of the fortress being also inhabited during the Ancient Roman and Early Byzantine period. It was considerably renovated in the 13th century (more precisely 1231) during the rule of Bulgarian tsar Ivan Asen II to serve as a border fortification against Latin raids. The best preserved and most notable feature of Asen's Fortress is the Church of the Holy Mother of God from the 12th-13th century.

You will have a two-hour guided tour in the Old Town of Plovdiv where you will visit some of the signature houses, the church, the Roman theater, and stadium. Then you will have free time for lunch and exploration. In the afternoon you will be transferred to the Asen’s Fortress to learn more about the history of this region and its cultural richness.
